How to install Wittner geared pegs
Here’s an instructional video I put together for installing Wittner geared pegs in a cello. The same principles can be applied to violin and viola Wittner peg installation as well.
Peg reamer is 1:25 taper
We are using 10.8mm pegs for a 1/2 size cello. I recommend using the smallest size peg that will work on your instrument to avoid removing more wood than is necessary. The 12.5 is the common size for 4/4 cellos. Although the peg is called a 12.5 you ream less wood out than you do for a 12 mm Knilling peg.
The pegs push in quite a bit further than one would expect so go slow and check often. Generally about 1/3 rd the way into the second (smaller) pegbox hole is enough but it could be les...

Troubleshooting Knilling Geared Pegs that are slipping

Occasionally the cyanoacrylate adhesive (CA glue) bond that secures Knilling Perfection pegs releases. This happens due to extreme weather changes or using them with too much friction like someone not realizing they are not normal wood friction pegs and they apply too much inward pressure while tuning, breaking the bond. What occurs when the glue bond fails the peg housing will unthread while t...
How to install Knilling Geared Pegs on Cello
Просмотров 8 тыс.2 года назад
Geared pegs are especially useful for cellists who live in areas with extreme weather fluctuations, or who just don't want to have to bother retuning their cello every time they pick it up. When the weather changes, the wood of your pegs and the wood of the peg box can swell or shrink, often causing slipping pegs and tuning issues. Here’s a short instructional video by Linda on installing Knill...

Despite its smaller stature, this cello has a sound that is resonant and powerful. The G and C strings are chocolaty and rich whilst still being responsive when playing at faster tempos. The A string is sweet; however, it can be pushed for a more direct sound that projects very well. Overall its tone is malleable and complex, allowing a more advanced player to create different colors according ...

Is it possible to fit the pegs without removing all 4 strings?
@@niallchurch2679 Yes you can start with the C peg ( G for violin) get that one done and installed, then install the string and tune up. Then do the A if the reamer clears the D and G strings. You don’t want to damage them. If that risks string damage, just let the one low string maintain bridge tension and take out all the other three pegs to complete the installation. Watch the bridge when tuning up as it may want to lean forward.
Hi, thank you for the very informative video. I have old cello pages like a bass. Could you please tell me if I should keep them or Cheng them? Could you please give your expert opinion? Thank you .
Is that the real thing that's inside? It's very clever how they've done it!
Haven't put mine on yet, but, you can feel a little weight in the heads! Some ppl think they're ugly,I don't know, they look pretty good to me,it would be hard to tell them from wooden pegs!

@@LindaWestCellos Is it possible, with a violin to do change one at a time, and leave the strings on the pegs that haven't been done yet?
@@niallchurch2679 Yes, I explained above.
Gauging how hard to push them in?
Would be lovely if you did one with a violin!
It’s exactly the same approach as the cello peg installation.
Hi, thank you for the very informative video. I have an old cello. The pegs are mechanical, like bass. What is your opinion? I don't know what should I change them or not . Thank you for your time.
must be wonderful to have such an ear!
This is a great video. Thank you! I probably will ask my luthier to do this for me as the pegs are expensive. One question though. How do I know what sice pegs I would need for my cello?
Measure your pegs right at the pegbox, the head side. Most will be 12.5mm. I don’t recommend buying oversized Wittners as removing excessive wood weakens the pegbox. It’s best to use the smallest diameter that will work.
Thank you.
@@PastecinoI should add unlike knillings the WITTNER peg size is up at the collar so 12.5 size is for 12mm and under. By the way this is Linda West from my RUclips alter ego.
Thanks for the video! i do need to know though- how to set up the action?
That generally happens with the bridge. If the bridge is too tall it needs adjustment. The top curvature is important for bowing one string at a time and have ample clearance between strings as well as clearing the sides of the cello. The space between the string and end of fingerboard is where you measure. A string 5 mm C string 8 mm. If the fingerboard has proper curve it will be 5,6,7,8 give or take. It is best done by a luthier as the bridge also needs to be thinned. Top edge 2-3 mm thick. That said there is much more to it than that.
thankyou,clear and concise,appreciated Terrence
Thank you. Also, I love your sweatshirt
Your techniques worked like a charm! Thank you!
Thank you! Wonderful little workshop talk!
Just purchased the two types in all 3 colors(Latex Free; Clear Plastic and Latex; Black, & Amber). Would reccomend to put the black and amber ones on wooden and carbon fiber violin horse-hair bows that are used inside than outside(the clear one would be best with Performances and concerts outside, since latex melts).
thank you so much Linda most helpful video for cello bridges in RUclips
I am so happy that you have posted here, I have a 1915 German student bass that my cat knocked over about 10 years ago and no one would repair it and was told to just get rid of it. I almost did, but decided to just store it in the basement, that maybe someone would take on the project. Now ten years later your video popped up on my feed...it's a sign from God, you have made it accessible, thank you thank you thank you, you are a godsend
show that you have to have the expertise and experience of a luthier. I my try to do change end pin on my L&C carbon fiber but would not dare to try that on a veery valueble tradional cello
Thank you for the straightforward and extremely informative video. You provided an easy to follow, step-by-step process for setting the bridge. I really appreciate it 🙏🏼 Have a great day!
Great video, thank you.
Hi Linda, Thanks for a great channel! You have a video on bow compatibility but the comments were turned off. What makes a bow less compatible? Construction, hair....? Thanks!
Bow compatibility has more to do with the stick and its resonant frequency and compatibility with the instrument. After sorting out which bows your instrument likes you , the player then has to determine which bow feels good in your hand and improves the overall tonal qualities of the instrument and assists you in with more technical maneuvering. There’s a lot of factors involved making bow selection more difficult than you would expect.
Salvei o vídeo de tão instrutivo, muito obrigado!
Thanks Linda! I am trying to build an arpeggione (my first build of anything, ever) and the bridge has been stressing me
Thank you for this video! How long should one wait after gluing before putting the string back on and tuning it up?
Hi Linda! I loved your video. It was very helpful. I am wondering if prefer or you’d recommend the Musilia S3 vs the Accord ultralight case? My daughter is at a music conservatory in Tokyo and she is very petite (with spaghetti noodle arms) so I want to get her the best possible option. Also, how long do these ultralight cases take to get in stock? Thank you!

Thank you, Linda. I took fiddle lessons for a year when I was 14-15 but haven't played in a long time. I recently -- at age 77 -- purchased my very first (and probably last) 'cello! It arrived with the bridge down, so this video of yours is a real godsend. I appreciate the clarity of your explanation and demonstration.
Thanks for making this video! Really helped to see the whole process. For the sanding part, just a tip I got from a coworker that might be helpful to someone -- put the sandpaper on a squishy surface like a rubber mat or folded cloth. That causes it to sink in/give a little bit, which makes the sandpaper hug all surfaces a little closer and more evenly, making it more forgiving when making the lentil shape on the end.
If you look close a sheet of cork was used as backing. With the silicon carbide paper it tears if the backing is too soft. Yes backing that gives a little does help.
@@mamawelder very cool, i didn't see that.
I followed your excellent lesson and installed the Knilling Geared Pegs on my cello. I really like them! However, one of them is harder to turn than the others. What might have caused this? The peg was the right size and I only put glue around the outer edge. Should I heat the peg, remove it, and try again?
When you threaded it in you may have made the head friction to tight. Does working the head loose and reseating help? The head pulls out about 3-4 mm to release friction and if pushed in increases friction.
@@LindaWestCellos Yes, indeed, you spotted the problem! The peg now turns as it should. Thank you so much, Linda!
Glad that resolved the issue.
It was the G peg that gave me trouble. It is the hardest to wind because of its position. The G string has to be carefully managed while winding or it starts to pile up. Building on your suggestion with the head, I realized that the head had to be pulled out about halfway before winding where it seemed far too loose. But when I wound the string all the way, it balanced out. The other heads did not require this. Thank you again for helping so many of us with the great video. I absolutely love the Knilling Geared Pegs and believe that many others will now have the knowledge and confidence to install them You are remarkably generous with your time and expertise!
Does Calin Wultur make a professional level 3/4 cello?
In rare occasions we can get them. We currently have a Polish made professional 3/4 cello.
@mamawelder where are you located
Fantastic video, absolutely fascinating! Can you show us how you install a fallen sound post?
Good and Hard job.
Thank you as always, Linda! Can I widen a diameter of peg’s string hole? I usually play with gut string, and it is thicker than steel string.
Hi Linda, I just ordered a Gewa Air, where the upper bound is reported either 36 cm or 355 mm. My cello seems to be 355 mm. I am a bit worried it wouldn't fit. I checkedmultiple options, but since my total length is 129 cm, I need the 130 long case that Gewa can offer. Bam models seem tobeonly 124 long. Any thoughts? The case should arrive in the next days, but my instrment is abroad, so I would travel the empty case by train to the instrument. Therefore after trying and realizing it isnot a good fit, I won't be able to return the case as it would be already used.
Is there a GEWA Air near you that you can check fit? FYI our dimensions are usually conservative.
Thank you for this video. It worked perfectly, first time.
super helpful!
What type of bow is he using, and which string set?
Hi Linda, thanks so much for this tutorial. Could you show us as well how to center the bridge ? Mine is way more towards the A string. Do I have to loosen all the strings with the pegs and then move the bridge as I want ?
Slightly loosen the strings using the tailpiece fine tuners first to see if that’s enough. I hook my thumb around one bridge leg and grab the c bout edge ( in your case bass side) and tap the other leg with my finger tip. I have strong hands so I’m able to move the bridge often without loosening. Only under certain conditions and the adjustment is a few millimeters. If it’s way off center or an old cello or a cello with brittle or delicate varnish that may be damaged by scooting, I will loosen the strings and carefully recenter the bridge.
❤Very verythink teacher
Just tried one today, think I'm going to buy, tried against jay haide and for me , I felt it was bolder sweeter and it rang so well.
They have excellent projection and dynamic range. Makes them easy to play. Congratulations!
Thx 🙏
surely its best to look along the neck when the strings are fitted and finely adjust the position of the bridge to ensure the strings leave the same space between the lowest and the highest string equally rather than relying on the ruler measurement from the f hole on each side. Secondly where were the fine tuners at the tailpiece end? You would have difficulty in tuning the strings correctly only using the pegs!
Pegs are geared fine tuners so you can tune easily
@@LindaWestCellos Using pegs only does NOT result in true accurate tuning!
Thank you very much
That was very helpful and detailed. Thank you, Linda.
THANK YOU!!
Thank you! Very helpful.
